Backfire UAVs for “Birds of Fury” squadron

Gathering for the combat and research work of the Combined Detachment of the “Zli Ptakhy” attack UAVs – Military and Naval Forces of Ukraine

  1. PROJECT BACKFIRE: 5 BpAK Backfire K1
  2. PROJECT BACKFIRE: Development of an improved version of the Backfire K2 UAV
  3. PROJECT BACKFIRE: Development of a training course for BpAK Backfire pilots
  4. BACKFIRE PROJECT: Ensuring the combat work of the “Zli Ptakhy” joint unit for three months
  5. DEVIL’S KODLO PROJECT: Development of a combat platform based on FPV drones

The goal is to provide an experimental joint unit “Evil Birds” of the BpAK for use in combat work, three complexes as soon as possible, two more complexes in the second phase to provide from the moment when the unit is expanded to a company

“Backfire – K1” is an updated version of the front-proven strike UAV of the “Bekfire” type. “Bekfaer K1” UAV is a 1st-class attack tactical UAV, aircraft-type, small, which is controlled by an autonomous mission.

Unmanned aerial vehicle complex (UAV) “Bekfaer K1” consists of:

  • 3rd unmanned aerial vehicle “Bekfire K-1”,
  • launcher,
  • control stations,
  • a specially equipped vehicle.

Main characteristics:

  • radius of action – 35 km
  • mission type – autonomous
  • payload – 3.6 kg
  • engine type – electric
  • practical ceiling – 1000 m
  • working height – 300 m
  • bomb drop height – 50-200 m.
  • cruising speed – 84 km/h
  • ammunition: 2 fragmentation cartridges from the “Smerch” 9N235 anti-aircraft missile system
  • resistant to the action of REB and PEP agents

Currently, by decision of the command, the Combined Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Unit of the Navy of Ukraine is preparing to be reformatted into a company of unmanned aerial vehicles.

The goal is to ensure the further development and implementation of changes to the Bekfaer UAV design based on the analysis of the effectiveness of use in combat conditions, as well as the development of new modifications to perform tasks of a different nature

  • Technological changes in fuselage production
  • Development of scout and kamikaze variations
  • Preparation for serial production of the Backfire K2 UAV (CNC, preparation for the production of the hull with new modifications, etc.)
  • Development of additional software for managing and forming missions

The goal is to be ready to transfer BpAK Bekfaer to other units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine by building a pilot training school from other units

  • Premises for the organization of an educational class
  • Computers and office equipment
  • Development of the curriculum

The goal is to provide practical costs for the use of Backfire anti-aircraft missiles by the “Zli Ptakhy” unit within three months

  • Fuel
  • Repair of machinery and vehicles
  • Medical support
  • Development of a protocol for the use of BpAK Backfire

The goal is to create an effective, but as simple as possible, impression complex of the enemy with the help of FPV drones in order to save the lives of FPV pilots, maximize enemy losses and reduce the entry threshold for potential users due to the maximum automation of the defeat and reducing the pilot’s task to the approximate range to the target.

  • Development of innovative technical solutions for various types of use of FPV drones at the front (EW-protected communication, homing, remote start, repeaters, autonomous target search, etc.)
  • Development of software for automating the operation of drones, control points, etc.
  • Development of protocols for the combat use of FPV drones, taking into account innovative solutions that change the tactics of using drones.
  • Setting up a laboratory for equipment development (chips, boards, means of communication, antennas, etc.)
  • Preparation for serial production of the FPV platform
